Colon Cleanse Pros and Cons

A colon cleanse or colonic is a popular way to cleanse the body of waste products and toxins that are present in the colon. Since the turn of the 21st century, colon cleanse products have increased in popularity because they are believed to improve the overall health of the body. By cleaning out the colon either directly or indirectly through oral medications that stimulate the colon to eject the toxin and waste materials, the net effect is that the body is now ready to accept new diets and exercise programs that will have a greater effect.

However, such products are not without their disadvantages as well. This is especially true for those who overuse cleansing products for the colon as the might wind up getting rid of more than just the toxins.

The Pros of a Colon Cleanse

1. Detoxify the Colon
The harmful chemicals that may have been building up in your colon over time can be flushed away with a colon cleanse. In addition, if you have mucus or pathological organisms in your colon, they can be washed away as well. A cleanse irrigate your colon and provide a quick solution to getting rid of the toxins that are present.

However, such cleanses should be done with warm, purified water only as adding other substances might actually irritate your colon and cause even more toxins to build up in the future.

2. Get Rid of Constipation
If there is an almost immediate benefit, it is that you will not longer suffer the immediate effects of constipation. When the stool in the colon hardens and dries out, it can back up the rest of the intestinal tract. By flushing out the colon with warm water, it can soften up the stools which will cause it to loosen and leave the body. If you have hardened stool along the colon walls, the cleanse may remove these elements and allow you to go to the bathroom on a regular basis

However, if you eat a diet rich in fiber with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you can prevent constipation from occurring and even lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. A colon cleanse is a good, temporary solution to the problem of constipation.

The Cons of a Colon Cleanse

1. Infection
If the water use or any of the equipment is not properly clean, then you could run the risk of infection when having your colon cleansed. Without sterilized equipment and water, your colon could be subject to a bacteria, yeast, virus or parasite infection that would be far worse that the toxins which are trapped in the colon present. Be sure that whether you are having cleanse professionally done or with at-home products that everything is sanitized first before you use it.

2. Carcinogens
If unfiltered tap water is being used, there is a chance of introducing a cancer causing chemical into your colon. Unlike drinking the water which would be subject to the acid in the stomach destroying much of this chemical, the colon has no such protection. Be sure that the water used is purified and not tap water otherwise you run the risk of contracting gastrointestinal tumors.

A colon cleanse is something that you might want to consult with your doctor before getting in order to understand if the benefits and risks are right for you.
