Laser Liposuction Pros and Cons

When it comes to liposuction, it has certainly revolutionized the medical field thanks to it being minimally invasive and comparatively safe in terms of removing excess fat. While traditional liposuction techniques pull or vacuum the fat out of the body, the laser liposuction method melts away the fat which is then drained from the body.

There are different types of lasers which are used in the procedure, but they all have relatively the same effect. It is important to understand all the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure before you make your decision. This is why consulting with your doctor is very important as all the health factors and risks can be taken into account.

The Pros of Laser Liposuction

Smaller Cannulas:
The cannulas is the instrument inserted into the body to remove the fat. The cannulas is smaller in laser liposuction units that traditional ones which means that the incision point will be smaller and less intrusive in the body.

No Scraping:
Instead of the traditional scraping method which can leave muscles sore and cause a considerable amount of pain and swelling, the laser actually melts the fat away which is less painful.

Collagen Production:
This form of liposuction actually encourages the production of collagen in the skin so that it shrinks back normally. Traditional methods of liposuction did not always do that which meant that in some cases the skin didn’t shrink after the fat was removed.

Local Anesthesia:
This is far safer than using general anesthesia which in some patients may create complications. By using a local anesthesia, the patient can go home quickly and have minimal trauma caused by the procedure itself.

Little Scarring:
Because sutures are not essential to the procedure, scarring is virtually invisible.

The Cons of Laser Liposuction

However, despite all the advantages there are certain issues with laser liposuction that will need to be fully discussed with your physician.

Expensive:
Being relatively new, this procedure is still fairly expensive so it will only be available to those with the money to have it performed.

Infection:
There is always a slight chance of infection even when using the laser system. While not a large chance, it is still one that will need to be taken into account.

Uneven Results:
If not performed correctly, you may wind up with some lumpiness in the fat that remains which results in an uneven and unnatural look. Aditionally, if you gain weight again you may need to repeat the liposuction process. However, you will not have to do so in the same area as the previous fat that has been removed. You will want to consult with your physician to see if this form of liposuction is right for you. Be sure to compare all the pros and cons, plus look at your own situation as this form of weight loss is generally not designed to remove large amounts of fat from the body.

All in all, laser liposuction is generally best for those who have small areas of stubborn fat that remains unaffected by traditional weight loss means.
