I recently started working with a new client. He’s a very successful entrepreneur, making millions of dollars a year.
However, he came to me because he said he’s been feeling tired for a while, he feels bloated all the time, his blood pressure is up and down and he’s not able to perform sexually.
So, I had him do a full blood test and there were a bunch of problems. But one that he was shocked about was he had major kidney problems.
And this is a BIG problem because your kidneys filter toxins and control circulation in the body.
A weak kidney is like having dirty blood running through your veins all day long.
It’s very toxic and only gets worse unless you do something about it the right way.
Keep in mind, that once your kidneys stop working, you die.
Your kidneys detox your body and work with your liver. However, the liver can regenerate and improve – your kidneys seem to only get weaker as you age.
High blood pressure, blood sugar and so many other body functions are related to your kidneys.
Many drugs go through both the kidneys and the liver. When you take Tylenol, that damages your kidneys.
Scary Stats About Kidneys
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects about 40 million adults in the US, which is about 15% of the population or 1 in 7 adults.
Now, this is a full-blown kidney disease.
This does NOT take into account the millions of people with weak kidneys who will eventually have kidney disease or kidney failure if they don’t take action.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease, which accounts for 75% of chronic kidney disease cases.
Sadly, 1 in 3 adults have diabetes and 2 in 3 people have high blood sugar.
1 in 4 adults have high blood pressure.
In both situations, people don’t even know they have these problems.
All of these issues basically reduce blood flow and circulation, which negatively affects all of your organs, your brain, energy levels, muscle, and even sexual performance.
I mention all of this to let you know that kidney problems are very serious and yet, something most people don’t talk about.
With that said, let’s talk about solutions for improving your kidneys.
Let’s first start with the 7 best foods with clinical studies supporting healthy kidney function.
Blueberries
A study published in Nutrients showed that blueberry consumption can benefit kidney health by reducing the burden on the organ’s filtering process.
Blueberries are high in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the kidneys. The anti-inflammatory properties can reduce damage to the kidney tissues.
Please eat whole blueberries, not the juice because it’s high in sugar. And since it’s thin skin, better to eat organic when possible.
Cranberries
Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that regular consumption of cranberry products can significantly reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs and also support kidney health.
Similar to blueberries and other fruits, eat the whole fruit – not the juice which is too high in sugar, which then increases blood sugar and stresses your organs, such as your kidneys.
Garlic
A study in Phytomedicine found that eating raw garlic or consuming garlic supplements can decrease inflammation and oxidative stress, reducing the risk of kidney damage in hypertensive patients.
Garlic can cause bad breath, so taking the supplement form would probably be a better option.
Cauliflower
Research published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research highlights the role of cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower in reducing kidney inflammation and improving detoxification pathways in the kidneys.
Olive Oil
According to research in Nutrition & Metabolism, the monounsaturated fats in olive oil can help decrease inflammation in Chronic Kidney Disease CKD patients, improving kidney function markers.
Fatty Fish (e.g., Salmon)
A study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology highlighted that omega-3 supplementation can reduce proteinuria (excess protein in the urine) and lower blood pressure in patients with kidney disease
Salmon is a really good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Now, if you don’t like salmon or fatty fish, then you should supplement with 2-4 grams of fish oil daily.
Pumpkin Seeds
A study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that pumpkin seeds may help decrease the risk of forming kidney stones due to their high magnesium content.
I also suggest supplementing with extra magnesium for most people. It’s a vital mineral that most of us are deficient in.
Magnesium has dozens of health benefits, one of them is lowering blood pressure and reducing kidney stones.
Based on human clinical studies, these were some of the best foods that support healthy kidney function.
Supplements
Now, I also want to give you some very powerful supplements to consider since it’s easier for most people to take a supplement, rather than make big diet changes.
I already mentioned fish oil and magnesium.
An herb called Astragalus is very effective at improving kidney function. I have a lot of my athlete clients taking this, especially those who lift weights and take performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids.
However, you need a high dose. At least 3-5 grams daily. So, don’t bother with the liquid drops. Even the capsules are going to get very expensive.
I would get the powder, it’s a lot cheaper. I then put half a tablespoon in my protein shakes every day.
My Favorite Solutions
One of the biggest stressors on your kidneys is high blood pressure.
My family and I take Blood Pressure Optimizer because it contains all the clinically researched ingredients in one pill.
Also, you want to improve blood flow. As we get older, circulation gets worse as I stated earlier.
For that, I take Blood FLOW Optimizer.
I combine the two and the results are much better together.
However, you should get the one you think your body needs.
Please don’t just passively listen to my words. Take action because your organs, especially your kidney are very important to every aspect of your health.
Implement some of the foods I mentioned today and add in the supplements for additional benefits and improvements.
