Visceral fat – also known as “belly fat” or “pot belly” – is the dangerous fat that surrounds your internal organs.
Unlike the subcutaneous fat under your skin, visceral fat increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and even hormonal imbalances.
Other than hormones, your diet is the #1 factor in controlling visceral fat.
At the end of this article, I’ll let you know the real cause of unhealthy visceral fat.
However, let me first reveal the 3 worst foods…
1. Sugar
Almost all forms of sugar increase visceral fat because they shoot up your blood sugar, which raises insulin levels and eventually causes insulin resistance. This can lead to diabetes and fatty liver disease.
Sugar includes syrups, nectar, soda, and juice. Read the label because most packaged foods contain added sugars.
2. Refined & Packaged Carbohydrates
These foods taste the best — and they’re even worse.
Pastries, bread, and similar foods have high sugar and fat.
This makes them:
- Highly addictive
- Super high in calories
- More likely to cause insulin resistance and visceral fat
There are healthy carbs you can have, such as some fruits, quinoa, oats, yams, legumes, and even small amounts of white rice.
3. Alcohol
You’ve heard of “beer belly”?
Well, beer is one of the worst causes of visceral fat due to the extra carbs — and it’s more estrogenic than other alcohols.
All alcohol can increase visceral fat over time due to negative hormonal changes and liver stress.
But if you’re going to drink, wine, vodka, or tequila would be better than beer.
Just remember that alcohol can lower testosterone and increase estrogen, which increases visceral fat.
Bottom Line: The Real Cause of Visceral Fat
The real cause of visceral fat is insulin resistance, caused by negative hormonal changes and aging.
Other contributing factors include:
- Lack of exercise
- Less muscle mass
- High blood sugar
- Poor sleep
- High-stress hormones
- A diet high in sugar, carbs, and fat (which is most people’s diet)
All of these cause negative hormonal changes. So, you need to do the opposite.
How to Reduce Visceral Fat Naturally
- Exercise more and build muscle
- Reduce carbs and sugar
- Increase protein and vegetables
- Prioritize quality sleep
- Reduce stress
Intermittent fasting is also very helpful.
I have additional resources and videos on how to dramatically improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity so you can have a smaller and leaner stomach.
Please know that visceral fat will only get worse as we get older.
Take action now, make small improvements and you’ll look and feel better — and live a longer and healthier life.
