I get a lot of questions about morning erections or morning wood as some guys call it.
Medically it’s called “nocturnal penile tumescense” or NPT for short.
So today you’ll discover:

What Causes Morning Erections?
There are a variety of reasons you would get morning wood. Here are the top 5 most probable ones.
Parasympathetic Nervous System:
This part of your nervous system takes control while you sleep, especially during REM sleep, the stage where you dream. This can trigger erections.
REM sleep typically happens near the morning hours, which is why you may also get the morning wood.
Hormonal Changes:
Your testosterone levels are highest in the morning, right after waking up from REM sleep. This hormone spike can cause an erection, even without physical stimulation.
This also explains why when you’re younger, you’d get random erections, sometimes at embarrassing places – maybe in the pool swimming or somewhere else that isn’t appropriate.
A massive spike in testosterone, which happens in the morning, can cause this non-stimulatory erection.
Full Bladder:
A full bladder might press on a nerve that triggers your parasympathetic system, leading to an erection.
This also makes sense when you think about it since the morning is when most guys, have to urinate the most.
Brain Relaxation:
During the day, your body releases hormones to suppress erections. These are mainly norepinephrine and epinephrine (also known as adrenaline).
These hormones are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which is active when you are awake and alert.
Remember, this is the opposite of the parasympathetic system I mentioned earlier that can cause erections while sleeping.
Adrenalin work to constrict blood vessels, making them smaller, less blood flow, and so forth … including those in the penis, making it less likely for an erection to occur.
This also happens when you get nervous before sex. Your adrenalin shoots up, stress hormones such as cortisol increase, your body gets tense and the blood goes AWAY from the penis.
More on this later…
Anyway, the point is at night, especially during REM sleep, the activity of the sympathetic nervous system decreases, and the parasympathetic nervous system takes over. This shift allows for relaxation of the blood vessels and an increase in blood flow to the penis, which can lead to nocturnal erections.
Physical Stimulation:
Even if you’re asleep, your body can still respond to touch and thus, an erection can happen. If your genitals are touched, it may cause an erection.
If your genitals rub against something – such as the mattress or sheets or whatever… That slight stimulation, coupled with everything else I’ve mentioned, can cause an erection while you’re sleeping.
What Does Morning Wood Mean?
Morning wood is a normal and healthy part of sleep. It means that the penile tissue, blood, and nervous system are in good condition, working properly, and are healthy.
Now, I mention MORNING erections since that’s the one most guys will notice when they wake up.
However, that’s not the only time you get erections while sleeping.
As stated earlier, Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT), also known as sleep-related erections, usually occurs 3–5 times during an 8-hour sleep period.
These erections can last more than 30 minutes and sometimes up to 2 hours.
NPT is more common in younger men because they have higher testosterone levels, and can occur every morning and multiple times during the night.
As men age into their 40s and 50s, they may experience fewer NPT episodes due to a decline in testosterone.
What’s important to note is that these NPT erections contribute to penile health.
In some way, the penis is like a muscle – the more often it pumps up and the bigger the pump, the healthier the muscle and in this case, the penis.
As the saying goes, “use it or lose it”.
This is why pumping and penis exercises can also help improve erections.
Lack Of Morning Wood = Serious Health Problems?
Sadly, the less often you get these erections, the less healthy you are.
In fact, the research shows that the lack of erections, more specifically, the morning wood and NPT, is a warning sign of potential heart problems.
This means poor blood flow to the heart AND brain.
This could be plaque buildup.
Or high blood pressure or blood sugar levels.
It is also an indicator of low testosterone and poor hormonal balance.
And I’ll get to solutions about this in a minute.
Warnings About Morning Wood
As we’ve learned today, morning wood and NPT is necessary and important for your health, including penis health.
So, what if you’re NOT getting these morning erections? Like you used to? Not as often? Or worse yet, AT ALL?
Maybe it happens once a week or a month?
Well, as stated, this is really bad warning sign that something is wrong.
But, what’s the cause of this?
What’s “broken” in your body?
And more importantly, how can we fix it?
Causes Of NOT Getting Morning Erections
Not getting morning erections, also known as a reduction in or absence of nocturnal erections, can be a sign of various underlying health problems. Here are the top 7:
1. Erectile Dysfunction (ED):
- Vascular Issues: Conditions like atherosclerosis (narrowing of blood vessels) can reduce blood flow to the penis.
- Neurological Problems: Damage to the nerves that control erections, due to conditions like diabetes or spinal cord injuries.
2. Hormonal Imbalances:
- Low Testosterone Levels: Testosterone plays a key role in sexual function. Low levels, often due to aging, hypogonadism, hormonal imbalances, or lack of specific nutrients.
- Increased “Female” Hormones: Elevated levels of prolactin and estrogen, will reduce testosterone and reduce the refractory period and your ability to get erections.
- Increases in Stress Hormones: Earlier I mentioned how an increase in adrenaline will reduce blood flow. As this stress hormone increases, so will cortisol, which will then decrease testosterone levels.
3. Psychological Factors:
- Stress and Anxiety: Chronic stress or anxiety can affect your sexual function, including morning erections.
- Depression: Depression can lower libido and affect the frequency of nocturnal erections.
4. Medications:
- Antidepressants: Some medications, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can interfere with sexual function and reduce the occurrence of morning erections. These are popular drugs such as Prozac.
- Blood Pressure Medications: Certain antihypertensives can also impact erectile function.
- Hair Loss & Prostate Medications: Drugs used for hair loss and prostate growth, such as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors like Finasteride (Proscar & Propecia) will your ability to get and maintain erections.
- Sleep Medications: Many drugs, including those that are over the counter that are used for sleep, will reduce your erections.
Actually, there are a lot of drugs that cause erectile problems.
5. Lifestyle Factors:
- Poor Sleep Quality: Sleep disorders like sleep apnea or chronic sleep deprivation can interfere with REM sleep, where morning erections are most likely to occur. Poor sleep also causes numerous hormonal imbalances, such as a decrease in testosterone levels, while increasing cortisol levels.
- Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol can impair sexual function, and chronic use can lead to a decrease in morning erections.
- Smoking: Smoking can damage blood vessels and restrict blood flow, reducing the likelihood of morning erections.
6. Age:
Natural Aging: As men age, the frequency and intensity of morning erections may decrease due to changes in blood flow, nerve function, and hormone levels.
7. Underlying Medical Conditions:
Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can damage nerves and blood vessels, leading to a reduction in morning erections.
Cardiovascular Disease: Conditions affecting heart and blood vessel health can impact the ability to have morning erections.
Obesity: Excess weight can contribute to hormonal imbalances and vascular issues, both of which can reduce morning erections.
How To Increase Morning Wood & Improve Erections
Now we are near the end of today’s topic, and the part most of you care about is how to increase morning wood and improve the quality of your erections.
First, you need to stop doing all the negative things that I mentioned, such as:
- Not sleeping enough
- Changing your medications for alternatives that don’t cause these problems.
- Losing fat
- Lowering your stress levels
- Limiting or eliminating alcohol, smoking, marijuana, and other “street” drugs.
- Finally, you need to increase your testosterone levels.
Personally, when I take certain herbs that increase testosterone, the first week I notice I’m getting a ton of erections every time I get up to pee in the middle of the night or when I wake up in the morning.
These are crazy rock-hard, won’t go away kind.
It’s awesome and makes me feel super young again.
But, after a week or two, my body adapts and the erections aren’t as awesome.
However, they are still way better than before I took the supplements to boost my testosterone levels.
The other thing you need to do is improve your blood flow.
Again, I’ve made videos about this, in addition to supplements you can take that’ll quickly help increase circulation throughout your body – heart, brain, muscles, and yes, your penis.
Take action, and fix this situation because as stated in the very beginning – lack of morning wood and poor erection quality a major warning sign of poor health – for your heart and brain.
