Today, it’s 2026, and I want to answer a question I’ve gotten many times over the years:
“How do I get a thicker beard?”
Is it hormonal? Is it topical? What actually works?
Even though I don’t have a thick beard myself — and if I did, it would probably be all white at this point — I know a lot of guys today want that rugged, full facial hair look.
So, let’s talk about two simple and proven ways to boost beard growth.
What Really Controls Beard Growth?
Aside from genetics, your ability to grow facial hair comes down to two key hormones:
- Testosterone
- Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
DHT is produced when testosterone is converted by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. I explain how to support it in how to increase DHT for muscle and beard growth.
This is the hormone most associated with things like body hair growth, facial hair development, and, unfortunately, hair loss and prostate issues.
Beard Growth vs. Hair Loss: What’s the Deal?
Guys with high DHT are often bald and hairy. That thick hair on your back or shoulders? That’s DHT-driven.
But here’s what’s interesting — some guys have high testosterone and DHT, but still don’t have much body or facial hair.
That’s because it’s not just about hormone levels — it’s about how sensitive your androgen receptors are on the skin.
I’ve seen bodybuilders on steroids with full heads of hair and barely any body hair. That’s due to low skin sensitivity to androgens.
And for some ethnicities, like Asians, even higher hormone levels may not translate into visible hair growth because of this same receptor resistance.
Step 1: Optimize Your Testosterone Levels Naturally
The first and most important step is to optimize your testosterone and DHT levels naturally.
Higher testosterone leads to higher DHT, which will stimulate facial hair growth. If you’re struggling to grow a beard, there’s a good chance your testosterone is low or sub-optimal.
I’ve listed my recommended herbs, supplements, and lifestyle strategies to increase testosterone naturally in the description below this video.
Step 2: Use Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) on Your Beard
Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, is typically used as a topical treatment for head hair. But it also works for facial hair.
In fact, it was originally an oral blood pressure drug, and doctors noticed one “side effect” — guys started growing back their hair.
Later, they developed a topical version to target scalp hair — but here’s the thing: you can apply the same topical version to your face to help grow your beard.
How to Use Minoxidil on Your Beard
- Use the 5% topical solution — available in liquid or foam form
- Apply it twice daily — morning and night
- Don’t wash it off right away — leave it on your face for full absorption
- Be consistent — noticeable results may take 1 to 3 months, and significant results around 6 months
Liquid tends to work better for the face because it rubs in more effectively. Foam is lighter and better suited for scalp application.
Advanced Tips for Faster Beard Growth
For faster results, some people use higher concentrations of minoxidil — like 10% or even 12%.
But keep in mind:
- The higher the concentration, the more likely it is to leave a sticky film or residue on your face
- If you’re applying it during the day and need to go out, stick to 5%
- You can apply the stronger version at night and wash it off in the morning
Double Your Results by Combining Both Methods
If you want to maximize your beard growth, the ideal method is:
- Boost testosterone levels naturally using proven lifestyle and supplement strategies
- Apply topical minoxidil twice daily to stimulate localized hair growth
This two-pronged approach works like building muscle: testosterone builds the foundation, while the exercises (in this case, minoxidil) stimulate the localized growth response.
Summary: The Truth About Growing a Thicker Beard
If you want a thicker beard, it comes down to hormonal optimization and stimulating hair follicles in the right way.
Topical minoxidil works. So does raising your testosterone levels. But you’ll need patience, consistency, and the right combination of methods.
