What Is Turmeric / Curcumin
Curcumin is the amazing active compound that is found within the turmeric root powder.
Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color.
It has been used in India and many middle eastern countries for thousands of years as a spice and even as a medicinal herb.
These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin.
Some will ask what’s the difference between turmeric and curcumin and they are incorrectly used by many people.
Simply stated, Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric.
Health Benefits Of Curcumin
Curcumin extract and NOT turmeric powder have powerful health benefits:
- Potent Anti-Inflammatory: Most people take it for this primary reason. Inflammation is linked to pain, many diseases, cognitive problems, and degenerative conditions.
- A powerful antioxidant, which accelerates aging.
- Decreases heart disease, which is the #1 killer in the world.
However, despite all the amazing benefits… The curcumin content of turmeric is extremely low. It’s around 1%-3%.
PROBLEM #1 – Turmeric Is A Waste
And here is the first problem – in order to get the real benefits of the curcumin extract, you’d have to take grams of the turmeric powder – which nobody will do.
So – never use turmeric powder, unless you do so only as a spice.
Therefore, if you want to experience the full positive effects and benefits, you need to take a supplement that contains significant amounts of curcumin EXTRACT.
PROBLEM #2 – Poor Absorbability
Now, the second problem is that curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. So we need to add in small amounts of black pepper extract, called piperine to improve absorption.
Additionally, since Curcumin is fat-soluble, it’s a good idea to take it with food, which contains a little bit of fat.
Best Forms Of Curcumin/Turmeric Extract
So the first thing we want to do is take high curcumin extract and not the turmeric powder. So, READ the labels!
Now, many products will say 95% extract. But even these are only 50% absorbed. So you’ll have to take DOUBLE the dose to get the benefits – which is a waste of time and money.
