Paleo Diet Pros and Cons

The Paleo Diet has certainly garnered a considerable amount of attention since it was first introduced years ago as a weight-loss method. The diet itself is based on the idea that humans from the Paleolithic era which came before the advent of agriculture ate only the foods that could be hunted or gathered in their surroundings. Therefore, the modern Paleo Diet is restricted to foods such as the following:

  • Seafood, poultry and grass-fed meats.
  • Fruits, vegetables and nuts.
  • Seeds, eggs and the like.

Basically, any processed foods along with dairy and grains are discouraged from the diet program. The result has been that many thousands of people who have gone on the diet have lost weight. However, it is not without its drawbacks.

Pros of the Paleo Diet

There are certainly a number of advantages to the diet itself, starting with the emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and lean meats if desired. Many doctors and nutritionists recommend that we consume such food products in healthy amounts which offer many benefits to the body.

Given the effects of gluten on the body, particularly from those who respond poorly to the presence of this substance in their intestinal tract, this is the perfect diet to avoid it altogether.

Low in Sugars:
By avoiding processed sugars, the diet manages to avoid one of the easiest ways to pack on the pounds. In addition, the sugars that are consumed in the fruits and vegetables are often not as fully absorbed because of all the fiber which carries most of them through the digestive system without being absorbed by the body.

Easy Diet to Follow:
Here, you do not worry about counting calories or guessing about what is the appropriate portions of food that you must consume. By avoiding most of the foods that people tend to overindulge, the diet itself makes it easy to monitor as long as you stick to the food groups.

Cons of the Paleo Diet

While the Paleo Diet may seem like the perfect way to live, there are some considerable drawbacks which make it rather hard for many people to follow.

Fatty Meats:
While the diet does include lean meats such as poultry and fish, it does not restrict the consumption of meats loaded with fat. Considering that even today’s grass-fed animals are larger and have more fat in them than their Paleolithic counterparts, it does make it less compatible with the intention of the diet itself.

Lack of Micronutrients:
There is a lack of certain micronutrients such as Vitamin D and calcium in the diet. However, that can be overcome using supplements to boost either of these deficiencies and make it more palatable to stick to this program.

Perhaps the biggest threat to the diet itself is that it is so restrictive that many people simply want to have processed sugars, grains and the like which means that after a couple of months the Paleo Diet becomes history.

Overall, the Paleo Diet is one that can help people lose the excess fat, especially when combined with an exercise program. However, it is also more difficult to stick to the diet than some other programs because once you go off, the weight will come back.
